Eff. 01/01/2021 TSBDE Rule 104.1(B) requires “licensed dentist(s) whose practice includes direct patient care to completed not less than 2 hours of continuing education annually, and not less than 4 hours for each biennial renewal, regarding safe and effective pain management” NOTE: THIS CE REQUIREMENT IS NOT DEPENDENT ON WHETHER A DENTIST HOLDS A DEA REGISTRATION AND THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS FOR ORTHODONTISTS.

Course Description:

This is a new required course for dentists who hold a DEA registration. It must be completed between 09/01/2020 and 09/01/2021. 

Who should attend? Dentists who have a DEA registration and auxiliary staff (Designated Agents) tasked with preparing or handling prescriptions or who communicate prescriptions by phone or fax to pharmacies. New TSBDE Rule 111.1(b) went into effect on September 1, 2020.

Who should attend? Dentists who have controlled substances in their dental office and staff who have delegated duties related to handling, recordkeeping, transporting, or securing controlled substances in the office.


Course Objectives:

  • Participants will develop a detailed understanding of new and existing rules and regulations relating to the security, handling, and recordkeeping of controlled substances
  • Participants will learn do’s and don’ts of working with controlled substances
  • Participants will develop a working knowledge of safeguards necessary to prevent loss or theft of controlled substances

  • Participants will learn how to ensure Designated Agents are properly screened and duly authorized by their dentist(s)
